Patents

The Patents API provides access quality patent information coming from:

  • World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) – Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)
  • Wilhelm Lampl (WILA) – European (EP) and United States (US) patents
  • Derwent Innovation (International Patent Documentation – INPADOC, Derwent World Patents Index – DWPI Pharma patents)
  • Supplementary protection certificate (SPC)
  • Electronic Orange Book (marketing exclusivity and patent expiries preventing generic competition)
  • Patent office websites covering 95 countries (patent documents, patent extensions, file wrapper information — e.g. US Patent Application Information Retrieval (PAIR), INPADOC Legal Status…)
  • Abstracts from Derwent World Patent Index (DWPI) and up to 99 structures from Derwent Chemistry Resource (DCR) per patent
  • Other sources (e.g. press releases, drug structure information)

Patent records comprise bibliographic data and value added information (patent annotation and abstract), plus indexing (action, indication, technology), linking to company, drug, compound and literature records, Supplementary Protection Certificate and expiry data and marketing exclusivity where relevant (complete returned fields list of a patent family record).

The claims section provides details of the claims data for the patent family. One set of English language claims (first published) is presented for the family. Claims are not always taken from the primary patent; for example, where the primary patent is not an English language patent. Also, claims may not be available for all countries or authorities. The publication number, kind code and date of the patent publication that the claims were taken from are indicated.

Molfiles, structure images, reference sources are provided for each patent family record where relevant.

Available chemical structures include a single generic structure selected to represent a range of novel compounds covered and taken directly from the patent claims and a selection of other specific chemical structures associated with the DWPI Abstract.

  • Generic structure – A single static PNG image showing a generic, Markush type structure intended to represent a range of novel compounds covered and taken directly from the patent claims. Generic structure is only available for patents where the Annotation Classification is 'Novel'.
  • Other structure – A selection of other specific chemical structures associated with the DWPI Abstract and derived from Derwent Chemistry Resource (DCR). Up to 99 structures may be associated with a patent family.

The Derwent World Patent Index (DWPI) is an invaluable resource that adds efficiency and effectiveness to your search and review of prior art. Each DWPI enhanced abstract is a concise, English‐language summary prepared by the DWPI editorial team containing details of the claims, disclosures of the invention and highlighting the main use and advantages of the technology.

Patents API can help to you to

  • Find out the latest patent news for a given disease to guide research goals
  • Find out which companies are active in a particular therapeutic area or technology
  • Perform competitive intelligence to check when a patent falls into the public domain considering possible patent duration extension (Supplementary Protection Certificate)
  • Monitor patent family evolution over time

Content

  • Patent families deeply indexed with controlled vocabularies
  • Classification by patent type (Formulation, Product, "Diagnostic, Analysis and Assay", New use, Process, Product (Macromolecule), Drug delivery device, Drug combination, Biotechnological therapy, "Drug discovery & screening, genetic screening and combinatorial", Product derivative, Enabling technology, Nucleotide and gene technology Peptide technology, Non pharmaceutical therapy)
  • Manually curated titles and fielded abstracts, summarizing the invention
  • Selected chemical structures
  • Bibliographic information, including IPCs, filing dates, and inventors
  • Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) abstracts
  • Derwent Chemistry Resource (DCR) compounds data
